How to avoid addiction

Addiction is a form of compulsion. It focuses on consuming a particular substance or taking part in a specific activity. The activity is often pleasurable for the person suffering from the compulsion, but the continued desire interferes with their normal life. They may be experiencing failing health, or put their jobs or relationships at risk, but cannot seem to fight off the urge to do what their addiction compels them to do.

Physical or Psychological

Addictions do come in two different types: physical and psychological. Physical addiction occurs when the body adjusts to the presence of a particular substance, like cocaine and alcohol. To get the same effects, the person must consume larger quantities. Over time, an absence of the substance can yield negative physical effects, most commonly referred to as withdrawal. Symptoms of withdrawal could include fatigue, shaking, anxiety, depression, and vomiting.

Psychological addiction is a bit harder to define. Often, this refers to a person feeling the need to take a particular action when exposed to stress. For example, a person struggling financially may turn to gambling hoping for a big win to get them out of their financial rut. They may win some, lighting up the reward sector of the brain, but they will often lose a lot of money. Over time, money stress compels them to gamble to try to find a solution. This cycle can result in gambling addiction.

Avoiding Addiction

Many addictions start as a result of stress. To avoid harmful addictions, it is important to find healthy ways to manage stress. This can include learning when to take a break from a stressor, or adopting new habits that are ultimately beneficial. Some people find exercise incredibly helpful for stress management, as well as receiving support from friends, family, or mental health professionals. Meditation can be helpful, as well as enjoying a funny movie. By redirecting the stressful energy to a healthy activity, you can avoid turning to less healthy alternatives.

Certain substances are well known for being addictive by nature. Many illegal drugs, certain prescription medications, and nicotine can all be highly addictive. While trying something once does not automatically make you an addict, you cannot become addicted to something you have never done. In these cases, pure avoidance is an excellent strategy. This is especially true if there is a history of addiction in your family.

In some cases, being mindful of your consumption or participation can be incredibly helpful. For example, having the occasional sweet treat won’t derail your life, but overeating can have serious health consequences. By practicing moderation, you can allow yourself to enjoy something without making it a habit. However, if you feel that you do not have the self-control to only have something on occasion, it can be best to simply avoid it all together.

Getting Help

If you find yourself in the grips of an addiction, help is always available. You can speak with your doctor or a mental health professional that specializes in addiction. For those who are not comfortable starting there, share your struggles with close friends or family members. This will help you to create a support network that can stand by you while you get your life back on track. Many people think that they can overcome addiction themselves but that is often not the case. There is no shame in asking for help or seeking help if you need it.

You don’t have to fight the pull of addiction alone. There are many people who dedicate their lives to helping people beat addiction. So, don’t stay quiet if you need help, seek someone you can talk to.

5 Bad Nail Habits You Should Break, Immediately!

C9d250065811df100d4a bad nail habitsThe key to beautiful nails is one part amazing manicurist and one part healthy nails. This year, it is time to break your old habits and start the season off with healthy nails and habits. Here they are:

1. Peeling or picking at cuticles – Your cuticles are gentle layers that were put there to protect your nails and nail growth. If you pick and peel at them 1) improperly and 2) without properly prepping them, you can cause divots in your nail, loss of nail growth and even infection.

2. Biting your nails – First thing’s first, this habit is also horrible for your health. There is a great deal of bacteria that hides underneath your nails and putting this directly in your mouth can cause much undue sickness. Second, biting your nails causes them to become rigid and uneven, leading to snagging on surfaces, textures and clothing. If nails are bit too short, you can also run into problems of nail growth and constant infection.

3. Taking off your own gels - Ouch! You know better, plus it really, really hurts. Leave this one to the professionals, unless you want to peel off your entire nail. Taking off your own gels can lead to undue damage and pain.

4. Giving yourself pedicures – In case you hadn’t already learned from this horror story, giving yourself pedicures 1) isn’t easy, and 2) isn’t recommended. See how this girl ended up in the emergency room from doing her own pedi.

5. Not letting nails breathe between gel services – We love gels and we’ll be the first to admit it! But, as with any nail service, sometimes it’s good to give your nails a breather. You’ll notice your nails becoming thicker and more brittle the more often you replace gels on gels. Take a break and ask your manicurist for a conditioning treatment and nail strengthener instead!

How to Upload Pictures from your Computer to Instagram

Instagram is simply a service that combines photo sharing with social networking. It enables users to upload pictures, apply digital filters to them and share them on social networking services, such as Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, Tumblr. Your followers on Instagram can Like and comment on your photos.

It’s a fast, beautiful and fun way to share your photos with friends and family. Fortunately, the Instagram app is not only available for Apple and Android devices, its currently available for blackberry app but not sure of Instagram software download for PC.

Though you can log in to Instagram website on your PC, you cannot register nor upload photos, unless you use the Instagram mobile app. Nevertheless, there are now workarounds that let you upload Instagram photos from your desktop computer which include the use of dropbox, bluestacks app emulator and Gramblr deskptop app.

The dropbox trick involves you moving your photos into a dropbox folder after installing app on your PC. Then, access the folder on your smartphone's dropbox app, from where you can then share to Instagram. This seems more of photo transfer to me and not a trick to upload photos directly to Instagram.

On the other hand, if you download and install bluestacks on your PC, you will be able to run the Instagram for android app on your PC. Unfortunately, I don't fancy this solution because it is horribly slow. If you are using a sluggish PC, trust me, you will be frustrated.

You can check my scoop on how to use instagram on PC using the combination of ES File Explorer and Instagram on Bluestack app.

As at the time of publishing this post, the solution that worked for me easily is the use of Gramblr app. I successfully used it to upload this instagram photo to my account.

How Does Gramblr Works?

- Download Gramblr's photo uploader zip file to your PC and unzip it

- Launch the .exe file

- Sign in to Instagram

- Choose the photo you would like to upload

- Hit Upload

- Add and save a caption.

Done!

You can then go login to Instagram, click on your profile, to view the photo.

NOTE

==> If Gramblr throws an error telling you your picture is not in square dimensions, read: How do I make a picture exactly the size I want?

How do I make a picture exactly the size I want?

Select the crop tool by clicking on the 'Crop image' link and type in the height and width you want (e.g. 300x200).

When the crop-box appears, move it around by holding the left mouse button down and dragging until the crop-box is in the correct position.

When you are happy, click on the 'Apply Changes' button to crop your photo to the exact size.

How To Detect Hidden Camera With Mobile Phone and Camera Detectors

It's no more news that hidden cameras are now been planted in some locations. As technology advances, privacy diminishes. If you frequently make use of hotel rooms, trial rooms, changing rooms etc, then the chance of getting spotted by a hidden camera is very high. In this blog post, I've decided to share with you, how to detect a hidden camera with your cell phone and camera detectors.

How To Detect Hidden Camera With Mobile Phone

1. When you are in a private room, turn off the lights, and close the curtains. Launch your phone camera but do not turn the flash light on. Turn around the room with your cell phone. When tiny red or green LED light is found, that means that a hidden microphone or camera is installed. If no LED light, the room is OK.

2. Place a call on your cell phone, then wave the device around where you think there might be a hidden camera or microphone. If you can hear a clicking noise on the call, it means your phone might be interfering with an electromagnetic field.

If you can’t make a call there is a chance of a hidden camera too. The scientific explanation behind this phenomena is “interference of fiber optic cable during the signal transfer”.

3. Launch the flashlight of your smartphone and carefully examine books, clocks, air purifiers, lamps etc. If you notice any pinhole-sized holes, you might have a hidden camera in the room.

How to detect hidden camera behind mirror

Launch the flashlight of your smartphone and shine it directly onto a wall mounted mirror. Take the flashlight and move it progressively closer to the mirror until it touches the mirror. If you can see through the mirror, or notice the light shining through it, you have a one-way mirror, and possibly a hidden camera behind it. A mirror should always reflect light, not allow the light to penetrate through it.

Using Hidden Camera Detectors

Alternatively, you can buy hidden camera detectors. That's much better than searching for minuscule cameras hidden somewhere among the hundred possible places in the room. These portable devices are of different types, small and simple to use.

You can hold one of them up to your eye, and look around the room. When it finds a camera, you'll see the light reflection from the cameras LED. Another one vibrates when you're close in close vicinity to a hidden camera. Others give off flashing lights or beeping sounds when you sweep specific objects that contain hidden cameras.

I hope this info  helps.

How To Change Twitter Username Without Losing Followers and Tweets

If you've realized that you need a different Twitter handle, probably a shorter one or a more professional one, you can easily change the Twitter username without losing followers and your tweets.

Changing your username will not affect your existing followers, direct messages, or @replies. Your followers will simply see a new username next to your profile photo when you update.

Although, you could just get a new account, but this would mean building up a list of followers from scratch, and you’d lose all your tweets.

So, if you want to change your Twitter handle without losing followers and tweets, follow me through the steps below:

==> Log in to Twitter.com
==> Click on your avatar in the top right corner and click on "Settings".
==> On your account settings page, change the username listed in your username field.
==> Click "Save changes" button at the bottom of the page.

I recommend keeping your old username as a "forwarding page" to your new account - but with zero followers.

This means that as soon as you change the username, you should log out, then create a new Twitter account with the old username, using a new email address. Ensure you get this done before someone else does.

Once you’ve created the new account, fill in your bio and tell people that you have changed your name. Just insert something like, “This is my old username. I’ve updated my username to @NewUsername, so follow me there!”

Thereafter, send a tweet from the old account something like, “Hi guys, I've changed my username to @newUsername, you can follow me there!”

Now if anyone stumbles upon your old profile, they will see the link to your new account!

Below is an example from the old Twitter account of Nigeria President-Elect, Muhammadu Buhari:

If you've decided to change your Twitter username, make sure it’s the right decision for you. And this time, pick a name that will look good five years from now.
